Small Animal Firework Advice

Rabbits and Guinea Pigs are especially vulnerable to stress caused by fireworks. Every year we get calls from owners asking for tips to keep their furry friends safe and calm during what can be for many, a very frightening time.

We’ve put together some basic tips to help keep your smallest pets safe and comfortable during the fireworks season:

  • If they usually live outside, try to bring their hutch or enclosure inside – even into a garage or shed if there is no space within the home. If they must remain outside, cover their cage with a heavy blanket whilst still allowing ventilation. This should reduce some of the noise and bright flashing whilst still allowing airflow.
  • Ensure that your pet has extra bedding to burrow down in, as well as, additional toys and treats to keep them occupied.
  • If you are able to bring your pet indoors, close all windows, doors and curtains to reduce the noise. You can also turn on the television or radio to block out the sound – however, be aware that if your pet is not used to these types of noises then this could cause additional stress.
  • Guinea pigs and rabbits both love company so always try to keep them with a companion or a person with whom they are already comfortable.
