DIABETES MELLITUS

Diabetes Mellitus is a common disorder in dogs and cats. It occurs more commonly in middle-aged animals and can also be a side effect if your pet is over weight. The following are signs you should look for:

  • Drinking more

  • Urinating more

  • Weight loss despite having a healthy appetite

  • Sweet smelling breath

  • Poor coat condition

  • Lethargy

If your pet is presenting these signs then please contact your veterinary surgeon.

If an animal is diagnosed with diabetes mellitus there is no cure, but just as in humans it can be successfully controlled. Treating a diabetic requires finding the right balance between daily insulin injections (determined by the veterinary surgeon), feeding, weight control and exercise.
